End-of-Year Financial Planning: My Tips to Help You Prepare for 2025

As we wrap up 2024, it’s the perfect time to reflect on your financial progress and prepare for what lies ahead in 2025. Recently, I was asked to share my tips on FOX 5 Atlanta, and I talked about practical ways to approach year-end financial planning without making it overwhelming—or taking all the fun out of life.

Here’s my philosophy and how you can use it to finish the year strong and set yourself up for success in the new year.

Focus on What Matters Most

I don’t believe that cutting out your favorite lattes or skipping brunch with friends is the solution to all your financial challenges. Instead, I encourage you to prioritize what truly matters to you.

Pick the categories that bring you the most joy—whether it’s traveling, spending on your loved ones, or supporting a hobby you love—and focus your spending there. Then, take a close look at your expenses and identify areas where you can cut back without feeling deprived. By aligning your spending with your values, managing your money becomes much more intentional—and dare I say—enjoyable.

Make Time for a Financial “Date”

One of the most important steps in year-end planning is to sit down and actually do it. I like to think of this as a financial “date.”

Set aside 30 minutes to an hour, grab a checklist (yes, I’ve got one for you), and review the key areas of your finances. Whether it’s a solo session or a meeting with your partner, this intentional time can help you feel in control and ready to tackle the new year. The key is to actually put it on your calendar—because if it’s not scheduled, it’s easy to let it slide.

Here’s Your Year-End Financial To-Do List

To make it even easier, I’ve created a comprehensive End-of-Year Financial Check-Up guide to help you focus on the most important areas. Here are a few highlights:

  • Tweak Your Budget: Reassess your spending and make sure it still works for your priorities. Adjust for raises, changes in expenses, or inflation decreases.
  • Check Your Retirement Savings: Make sure you’re on track for your long-term goals, and contribute more if possible.
  • Contribute to Pre-Tax Accounts: Whether it’s a 529 Plan, an HSA, or an FSA, these accounts can help you save money on taxes while preparing for future expenses.
  • Build Your Emergency Fund: Layoffs and unexpected expenses can happen—aim for three to six months of living expenses in savings.
  • Update Your Estate Plan: Make sure your beneficiaries, wills, and other documents reflect your current wishes.

This checklist is designed to make year-end planning easier and more actionable, so you can approach 2025 with confidence.
